Dear DG Families,
French Immersion Application Deadlines are Quickly Approaching!
Are you interested in:
- the Early French Immersion program for your soon-to-be-Kindergarten child?
- the Late French Immersion program for your currently-in-grade-5 child?
Or, do you know a family who might be?
Please note and/or pass along this important information about French Immersion for the coming school year
Our district offers both early (Kindergarten) and late (grade 6) French Immersion programs. Both programs require an application prior to registration.
Here are some other important reminders/dates about French Immersion:
1. An on-line application form needs to first be completed and submitted by the deadline. This demonstrates a commitment by the families to register their child in the designated program if their child is accepted and to understand that there is a commitment for the child to stay in the French Immersion program until Grade 12. Applications will be available January 4th on both the School District website https://www.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/french-immersion/
2. The deadline for KINDERGARTEN applications is January 22nd at 4:00 pm. The deadline for GRADE 6 applications is February 12th at 4:00 pm.
3. ALL families hoping for a Kindergarten or Grade 6 (Late Immersion) spot for September 2023 MUST apply, including families who already have children in the French Immersion program., Having a child already in the French Immersion program does not guarantee you a spot for your upcoming child. But, it does increase your chances!
4. Spots are given following a priority order. Find out more, here https://www.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/french-immersion/
5. There is more IMPORTANT information on the District website https://www.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/french-immersion/
6. The deadline for KINDERGARTEN applications is January 22nd at 4:00 pm. The deadline for GRADE 6 applications is February 12th at 4:00 pm.
Student Led Conferences
Student led conferences are on Wednesday, January 25th and Thursday, January 26th. To accommodate this, students will be dismissed at noon on the 25th and at 2:00pm on the 26th.
What is a Student-Led Conference? Just as it sounds, a student-led conference is a conference with parents, led by the student. The role of the classroom teacher is a facilitator in the conference process. Students lead parents through a discussion of their work and established academic and social goals. The process includes the teacher facilitating several conferences at the same time. Conference appointments will be 20 min long (some students/parents may require less time, which is fine), and several sets of parents may sign up for each appointment time.

Student Crossing Guard Update from Ms Grund:
Thank you for your continued support of the crossing guard program at Devon Gardens. This important leadership role helps keep the students safe. In a recent crossing guard meeting, we decided to add an extra student to help with crossing guards where it was possible. Previously, 4 students volunteered in the morning and 4 after school. The students voiced that it was difficult to find a replacement when they were home sick. We needed to find another solution to ensure there were enough students at the cross walk to keep students safe knowing that students may need a replacement when they are unable to find one. Now there will be 5 volunteers in the morning and 5 after school on most days. If all 5 students are available for the day, the additional student can help at the Downs Road crossing. If you know you are going to be away for an extended period because of a planned vacation, please encourage your child to find their own replacements. Here is the new crossing guard schedule.
