June 2nd – 6th, 2025

Dear DG Families,

Can you believe we’re already in the last month of school?  It’s going to be a busy one, and reading these weekly posts will help on top of all the goings-on!

This week, please pay special attention to the PAC section, below.   Monday evening is the PAC Annual General Meeting where the Executive Elections will take place.    And, with Family Fun Night happening this Friday, there’s lots of important information in the “Family Fun Night” section, below!

While Pride has become synonymous with diversity, rainbows, and love, it was sparked from a much darker beginnings. Pride started as an uprising against police violence and injustice in June 1969 in New York City. Black and Brown trans women stood up to police violence. These acts of resistance, now known as the Stonewall uprising, led to the birth of Pride, Pride marches and the 2SLGBTQIA+ rights movement. Society has seen positive changes and improvements regarding the treatment and acceptance of members of this community, but there is still work to be done.   Attitudes and injustice still exist and all members of our school community, whether they identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ or not, are affected by homophobia and transphobia.   We need to ensure schools are inclusive and safe for students/parents/staff of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  Someone’s gender does not limit their interests and opportunities, and their sexual orientation and how they understand and express their gender are welcomed without discrimination.

Happy Pride, Dragons!

Lost and Found

There are quite a few items in our lost and found.  Please encourage your child to come and take a look for any items belonging to them (and/or come on by, yourselves, after school).      Unclaimed items will be taken to a donation centre before the end of the school year.

Summer Volunteers Needed to Water our Garden Area!

You may have seen the Western Red Cedar tree and the planter boxes on the front grass area of the school.  This area is well-used as an outdoor learning space during the school year and both the tree and the garden boxes require regular watering.   While school is in session, teachers and students take care of this.  During the summer, though, we need your help to keep these areas watered.

We will put together a schedule of volunteers to take turns doing the watering so that it’s a manageable task (many hands make light work).  You will have access to water and a hose at the school, and we will show you exactly what needs to be done before the end of the school year.

If you are willing to help out with watering this summer (particularly if you live nearby!), please email Mme Hamilton at hhamilton@deltaschools.ca   And, if you’ve helped with watering the garden in previous summers, you’re now an expert, so we’d love to have you on the team again this year!

Information from the School District

Electric Scooters and E-Bikes

As the warmer weather approaches, students will have more opportunities to engage in bike- and scooter-related activities like commuting to school. Please find below a reminder of the provincial regulations regarding electric kick scooters and electric bikes (e-bikes).

Electric kick scooters should not be used by students travelling to school or while on the school grounds.

Despite their popularity in our province, electric kick scooters remain illegal for use on public roads, bike lanes and sidewalks across most of B.C., except in a handful of cities that are taking part in a pilot program to test the use of them. The City of Delta is not part of the pilot program. Even in the pilot program cities, it is illegal for a person under 16 years of age to operate an electric kick scooter. You can view the provincial rules here: Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation.

E-Bikes: In B.C., it is illegal for students under 14 years of age to ride e-bikes. Students can operate light e-bikes at age 14 and standard e-bikes at 16. Parents or guardians of students below the minimum age must not knowingly permit them to ride an e-bike. For more information, including the definitions of a light e-bike and a standard e-bike, please visit: E-Bike Rules of the Road

Are you interested in hosting an International Student?  Or, do you know of a family who might be?

Come join a winning team! Delta School District International Programs is currently recruiting homestay families for international students coming to the Delta School District for September 2025. We are in the middle of placing students now and are looking for homes that want to welcome a student who has chosen Delta as their study abroad experience.
This year, Delta School District International Programs was nominated, for the 6th time in a row, for the StudyTravel Secondary School Award and this time we won!
Homestay families play such a huge role in the experience students have during their time abroad. This award is shared with all the wonderful homestay families who provide the best experience they can for students. We want to invite other families to join the experience and host an international student with Delta School District.
In addition to the September students (the majority of them will arrive on August 23rd and 24th) We also have 3-week English Language Learner (ELL) programs in July 2025 and August 2025. They will arrive from all over the world and have a strong desire to be in Delta. As mentioned, we are internationally recognized as a top destination for students wanting a study abroad experience in a Secondary School.
From September 2025, the reimbursement for hosting a student will increase to $1,200 per month. Multiple students from different nationalities can be hosted in one home. The majority of students in the homestay program are from Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, and Brazil. At the moment, more that 20 different countries are represented in the homestay program.
Many students are looking for a family connection and being a part of a family during their stay in Delta. Their study periods range from 3 months to half a school year, to a full school year, to multiple years. The short-term summer programs are where host parents welcome younger English learners into their home. It is a great way for students to see what school (and life) in Delta is like and for new homestay families to get a taste of what hosting is like.
If you are interested in hosting, please reach out to homestay@godelta.ca. If you are not able to host but know of a family who can, please send them our way. There are referral bonuses available for referring families.
