June 9th – 13th, 2025

Hey Dragons,

It was great to see everyone at Family Fun Night on Friday!  Our PAC did an amazing job organizing everything.   Please see their thank you message in the PAC section, below.   This will be another busy week at DG, wrapping up with Sports Day this Friday! We hope to see you there!  Please watch for the Sports Day notice coming home with students tomorrow!

Administrative Change Next Year

Administrative assignments for principals and vice principals typically happen in May or June for the following school year.  Some years there are many changes at schools across the District, and other years there is not a lot of movement.   As some of you may already know, there will be a change for Devon Gardens next year as Mme Hamilton, has been assigned to be the Vice Principal at Cliff Drive Elementary in Tsawwassen.  Over the two years that Mme Hamilton has been with us, she quickly made connections with the students, staff and families at our school, and we know that she will be greatly missed.   On a personal note, I have had many Vice Principals over my 20 years as a Principal in Delta, and Mme Hamilton is among the very best.  It has been a honour and privilege to work along side her.

Our incoming Vice Principal will be Mr. John Rodgers, who is currently the Vice Principal at Sunshine Hills Elementary.

SPORTS DAY – THIS FRIDAY!

We are looking forward to Sports Day on Friday, and are hopeful that the weather will cooperate.

Our theme for Sports Day this year is “THE BEACH” and students will be assigned to one of 4 colour teams:  red, blue, green and yellow.

Students will be bringing home a Sports Day notice on Monday indicating their colour team.   Students are encouraged to dress in their team colours on Sports Day.

As this is an outside day, students should come prepared for the weather (sunscreen, a hat, a jacket, dress in layers, etc…).

Students will be moving through the various Sports Day stations throughout the day, so they should also bring a water bottle they can keep with them outside for the day.   For this reason, please make sure your child’s water bottle is clearly labelled with their name.

Sports Day is a regular school day, in terms of the start and end of the day.   On Friday morning, students should arrive at the regular time and report to their line up areas, per usual.  There is not “early dismissal” on Sports Day, however, we aim to finish up between 2:30-2:40 pm so that there is time for clean-up.

Parents are welcome to come, watch and cheer for students on Sports Day.  We do ask that you please leave pets at home, however, as this will be a busy, noisy day.

Our PAC has organized special Panago lunch on Sports Day, previously ordered online as part of the Term 3 Special Lunch orders.  If you did not order Panago for your child, please ensure they bring their lunch on Sports Day.

All students will also require a quick, easy to eat recess snack on Sports Day, as well as a water bottle (labelled with your child’s name).

The Sports Day notice will include this information, and more, as well as the general schedule for the day.   Please be sure to read over it carefully.    There will also be a section for you to return to your child’s teacher regarding lunch time and dismissal, depending upon your family’s plans.

Please watch for the Sports Day notice coming home on Monday, from your child’s teacher.   Once you have seen the notice, if you still have questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Lost and Found

There are quite a few items in our lost and found.  Please encourage your child to come and take a look for any items belonging to them (and/or come on by, yourselves, after school).      Unclaimed items will be taken to a donation centre before the end of the school year.

Summer Volunteers Needed to Water our Garden Area!

You may have seen the Western Red Cedar tree and the planter boxes on the front grass area of the school.  This area is well-used as an outdoor learning space during the school year and both the tree and the garden boxes require regular watering.   While school is in session, teachers and students take care of this.  During the summer, though, we need your help to keep these areas watered.

We will put together a schedule of volunteers to take turns doing the watering so that it’s a manageable task (many hands make light work).  You will have access to water and a hose at the school, and we will show you exactly what needs to be done before the end of the school year.

If you are willing to help out with watering this summer (particularly if you live nearby!), please email Mme Hamilton at hhamilton@deltaschools.ca   And, if you’ve helped with watering the garden in previous summers, you’re now an expert, so we’d love to have you on the team again this year!

Wednesday Homework Club

On Wednesdays, from 1:45 pm – 2:45 pm, Tina Evanson (Ms. T) offers a Homework Club.
Ms. Evanson is able to support students with homework in English. Students who have work en français are welcome to attend Homework Club but French language support will not be available at this time.
If you would like to have your child attend Homework Club, please write a note in their planner on Wednesdays.  Ms. Evanson will be checking planners for parent permission as students arrive at Homework Club.   Please note – Students who do not have a note in their planner for Homework Club will be expected to head home at 1:45pm, per usual.   We will not be calling parents to ask permission that they stay.
At the end of Homework Club (2:45pm), Ms T will accompany students to the undercover area where they will be dismissed.  Please meet them there.

Information from the School District

Electric Scooters and E-Bikes

As the warmer weather approaches, students will have more opportunities to engage in bike- and scooter-related activities like commuting to school. Please find below a reminder of the provincial regulations regarding electric kick scooters and electric bikes (e-bikes).

Electric kick scooters should not be used by students travelling to school or while on the school grounds.

Despite their popularity in our province, electric kick scooters remain illegal for use on public roads, bike lanes and sidewalks across most of B.C., except in a handful of cities that are taking part in a pilot program to test the use of them. The City of Delta is not part of the pilot program. Even in the pilot program cities, it is illegal for a person under 16 years of age to operate an electric kick scooter. You can view the provincial rules here: Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation.

E-Bikes: In B.C., it is illegal for students under 14 years of age to ride e-bikes. Students can operate light e-bikes at age 14 and standard e-bikes at 16. Parents or guardians of students below the minimum age must not knowingly permit them to ride an e-bike. For more information, including the definitions of a light e-bike and a standard e-bike, please visit: E-Bike Rules of the Road

Are you interested in hosting an International Student?  Or, do you know of a family who might be?

Come join a winning team! Delta School District International Programs is currently recruiting homestay families for international students coming to the Delta School District for September 2025. We are in the middle of placing students now and are looking for homes that want to welcome a student who has chosen Delta as their study abroad experience.
This year, Delta School District International Programs was nominated, for the 6th time in a row, for the StudyTravel Secondary School Award and this time we won!
Homestay families play such a huge role in the experience students have during their time abroad. This award is shared with all the wonderful homestay families who provide the best experience they can for students. We want to invite other families to join the experience and host an international student with Delta School District.
In addition to the September students (the majority of them will arrive on August 23rd and 24th) We also have 3-week English Language Learner (ELL) programs in July 2025 and August 2025. They will arrive from all over the world and have a strong desire to be in Delta. As mentioned, we are internationally recognized as a top destination for students wanting a study abroad experience in a Secondary School.
From September 2025, the reimbursement for hosting a student will increase to $1,200 per month. Multiple students from different nationalities can be hosted in one home. The majority of students in the homestay program are from Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, and Brazil. At the moment, more that 20 different countries are represented in the homestay program.
Many students are looking for a family connection and being a part of a family during their stay in Delta. Their study periods range from 3 months to half a school year, to a full school year, to multiple years. The short-term summer programs are where host parents welcome younger English learners into their home. It is a great way for students to see what school (and life) in Delta is like and for new homestay families to get a taste of what hosting is like.
If you are interested in hosting, please reach out to homestay@godelta.ca. If you are not able to host but know of a family who can, please send them our way. There are referral bonuses available for referring families.
