October 15th – 18th, 2024

Dear DG Families,

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends.

Reminder:  Parent Teacher Conferences – October 16th & 17th

Online booking for parent teacher conferences will close tomorrow (Tuesday, October 15th).  If you haven’t yet booked your appointment, please do so as soon as possible.  Last week you should have received an email with instructions on how to sign up.   If you need assistance, please contact the school office at 604-581-6185 or email the school’s general mailbox at devongardens.elem@deltaschools.ca

A reminder that students will be dismissed at noon, October 16th and at 2:00pm on October 17th.

As teachers will be busy with conferences, it is imperative that students are picked up on time.

Please ensure you make arrangements for early pick-up on these days, and/or let your daycare providers know.

Great Shakeout

There are currently 555,820 participants (and counting!) in BC who are registered for “The Great ShakeOut”, taking place on October 17th, at 10:17 am.  And, our school is among them!    “The Great ShakeOut” is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer in case of an earthquake (“Drop, Cover and Hold On”), although we don’t just do this once a year.   We practice this emergency procedure, along with others such as fire drills and shelter in place procedures, several times throughout the school year.

In addition to participating in the Great ShakeOut, every fall we also review our school’s emergency plan and supplies.   We also ask families for an annual donation to help us keep our emergency bin (the big metal bin by the gravel field) well stocked.   This notice went home last Thursday.  Thank you to those families who have already sent in their contributions.   These funds are a vital part of our Emergency Prep program!

This is also a great time to review your own family’s Emergency Preparedness plan. Part of that plan should include who (an adult) would be able to pick up your children from school  in the event that an emergency situation (eg. earthquake) prevented you from getting to the school. On parent connect, this person is your designated “emergency release” (you can have more than one) and is the only person(s), other than a parent or guardian, to whom we can legally release a child in the event of an emergency closure.    A reminder that your “Emergency Release” is not necessarily the same person as your “Emergency Contact”, although it could be (ideally, your “Emergency Release” should be within walking distance of the school).

Thinking about Emergency Preparedness can be overwhelming.   The “Get Prepared” website has some great information and a step-by-step guide for putting together your family’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, in about 20 minutes.    The “Great ShakeOut” website also has some great information you might want to review, such as what to do if an earthquake hits while you are driving, and how to keep animals/pets safe during and after an earthquake.

Kinder Books

Introducing the Kinder Books Loyalty Program for schools! This year-long fundraising program is designed to help schools earn credit towards purchasing books for their school library.

Here’s how it works: for every net book purchase made at Kinder Books, the school will earn 10% of the purchase amount towards a credit at our store. At the end of the fundraiser, we will notify the school of their credit amount. The school can then decide to use the credit at the beginning of the new school year or at the end of the calendar year.

The best part? This program applies to all book purchases at our store, including special orders for kids and books for adults. Plus, orders can be placed online at www.kinderbooks.ca, making it easy for grandparents or other family members who live out of town to participate. Simply mention your school’s name at checkout, and we’ll credit your school accordingly.

Online orders can be picked up at the store during business hours or shipped through Canada Post
