Parent/Teacher Conferences are This Week

Parent/Teacher conferences happening this Wednesday and Thursday.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are an important opportunity for parents/guardians to have meaningful conversations with the teacher about their child’s progress and we encourage all parents to book an appointment. In order to accommodate as many parents/guardians as possible, we are offering in-person conferences on Wednesday October 18th and virtual conferences, via MS Teams, on Thursday, October 19th.  If you would prefer an in-person appointment on the 19th, or a phone appointment on either day,  that can also be arranged by contacting your child’s teacher.

If you haven’t yet signed up for a Parent/Teacher Conference appointment, the online booking through Parent Connect will be open until Tuesday (prior to Thanksgiving, you should have received an email from Ms Labrosse with instructions on how to sign up).

For those of you who have signed up for a virtual conference on Thursday, below is a link for a helpful guide for parents when using MS Teams.  We suggest that you read through this prior to conferences, and keep it handy for easy reference for your scheduled appointment.

Early Dismissal This Wed & Thurs

To accommodate parent teacher conferences this week, students will be dismissed 1 hour earlier on both Wednesday, October 18th (dismissal at noon) and Thursday, October 19th (dismissal at 2:00 p.m.).

As teachers will be busy with conferences, it is imperative that students are picked up on time. Please make a note of this in your calendars and advise daycare providers or other family members who pick up your child from school.

From the Library

The Book Fair is This Week!

Our Librarian, Mrs. Goldman, has arranged to have a Scholastic Book Fair at Devon Gardens this week (Monday – Thursday). Students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase books during their library times, as well as after school. The book fair will be open to students and their families until 4:00pm each day.

Great Shakeout

There are currently 523,577 participants, and counting, in BC who are registered for “The Great ShakeOut”, taking place on October 19th.  And, our school is among them!    “The Great ShakeOut” is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer in case of an earthquake (“Drop, Cover and Hold On”), although we don’t just do this once a year.   We practice this emergency procedure, along with others such as fire drills and shelter in place procedures, several times throughout the school year.

In addition to participating in the Great ShakeOut, every fall we also review our school’s emergency plan and supplies.   We also ask families for a small annual donation to help us keep our emergency bin (the big metal bin by the gravel field) well stocked.  Please watch for this notice, coming home on Thursday.   Thank you, in advance, for sending in your donations   Your contributions are a vital part of our Emergency Prep program!

This is also a great time to review your own family’s Emergency Preparedness plan. Part of that plan should include who (an adult) would be able to pick up your children from school  in the event that an emergency situation (eg. earthquake) prevented you from getting to the school. On parent connect, this person is your designated “emergency release” (you can have more than one) and is the only person(s), other than a parent or guardian, to whom we can legally release a child in the event of an emergency closure.    A reminder that your “Emergency Release” is not necessarily the same person as your “Emergency Contact”, although it could be (ideally, your “Emergency Release” should be within walking distance of the school).   To review, again, the difference between Emergency Release and Emergency Contact, and to add/update an “Emergency Release” contact, please refer to this page on our website.   The  “Emergency Release” information is one of the few sections on Parent Connect that parents can update themselves.

Thinking about Emergency Preparedness can be overwhelming.   The “Get Prepared” website has some great information and a step-by-step guide for putting together your family’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, in about 20 minutes.    The “Great ShakeOut” website also has some great information you might want to review, such as what to do if an earthquake hits while you are driving, and how to keep animals/pets safe during and after an earthquake.

Adult Crossing Guards Needed

We are still looking for adult crossing guards, both full time (at Nordel and 112th), part time (at 112th by the entrance to the school field) and casual/on-call.  If you are interested, or you know someone who might be, please email our Vice Principal, Mme Hamilton, or call the school office (604-581-6185).
