Devon Gardens Spirit Wear, featuring our NEW logo, is on sale for one more week! There are different styles to choose from (t-shirts, hoodies, sweat pants) and all orders and payment are done on-line, so there is nothing that needs to be returned to the school.

Here are some important things to know:

  • Ordering is available until end of day, October 30th
  • Items will be delivered to the school in early December
  • Be sure to put your child’s name and teacher’s name when prompted to do so, before submitting your order.  If you are submitting one order for multiple children, please put everything under one child’s name (eg. youngest)

Please note, there are no returns or exchanges, so please use the sizing information provided and choose carefully when it comes to sizes.  And be sure to double check your order before submitting.

Emergency Preparedness Donations

To help keep our Emergency Preparedness bin well stocked, we ask families for a small annual donation because some items, like food and water rations, have a shelf life and need to be replaced when they expire.  This year, for instance, we will need to replace the individual/per person water packets.

Thank you to those families who have already sent in their donations.  If you haven’t yet, please do so by Friday. Your contributions are a vital part of our Emergency Prep program!

 

 

 

 

Halloween

Halloween is Tuesday!  Our Halloween Parade will  begin at approximately 9:15 am.  A portion of the parade will be outside, around the back side of the building and parents are welcome to attend/take photos, along the outdoor section of the parade route. 

Not all students want to dress up for Halloween, and that’s OK!  Students who do wish to dress up for the parade should come to school dressed in their Halloween Costume, as students will not be changing into their costumes/putting on make-up at school before the parade.  Students who are coming in costume should also bring an extra set of clothes for after the parade. This will ensure that costumes are kept safe and intact for trick or treating that evening.e or give them flashlights or glow sticks to carry to ensure they are visible to motorists.

Guidelines for Halloween Costumes at School

Costumes:

  • should not be too scary (some of our Kindergarten students have not yet turned 5)
  • should be age appropriate
  • that promote illegal activities, drugs/alcohol, could be offensive to others, or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, or religion are NOT ok for school
  • must be safe & comfortable.  Students must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see and hear.  Anything that limits vision or restricts movement can lead to falling & other injuries. That’s no fun on Halloween!
  • that include masks must not fully obscure face or limit vision.  Students may wear masks during the parade, provided they can safely see
  • must be in line with our dress guidelines
  • appropriate for and respects the learning environment of the school, including outdoor learning, recess and lunch (students are dressed for the weather)

Also:

  • toy/replica weapons, objects that can be mistaken as such, are not permitted at school
  • props and accessories such as magic wands, brooms, lightsabers, tiaras, etc… must be used safely (these items are more likely to get lost/broken, so please consider this careful)
  • not all students like to dress up and that’s ok, too!  Students who don’t want to dress up but still want to participate in Halloween could wear their Halloween colours (orange and black), or they just come in their everyday clothes
  • since costumes worn to school may not survive intact, consider a spare/alternate costume for the school Halloween parade and save the “real” one for trick or treating that night

If students or parents have any questions about the suitability of their costumes for school, they should check with their teacher, or Mme Greenhalgh, ahead of time.

Winter is also coming …. eventually!

Although the weather has been unseasonably warm so far this fall, we know it won’t last forever.  In fact, the forecast is calling for rain starting this week.    In anticipation of the colder weather, now is the time to dig our rain and cold weather clothing out of the back of the closets and storage areas.  Ensuring students come dressed for the weather isn’t just important for playing outside.  It’s also important in case of an emergency requiring evacuation of the building.

A reminder that ALL students (yes, even grade 7s) should have a change of clothes at school, in a ziplock bag labelled with their name,  That way, if students get wet or slip on the muddy field they’ll have clean, dry clothes to change into.

 

Do you know someone who might like to be a Crossing Guard?

We are still looking for adult crossing guards, both full time (at Nordel and 112th), part time (at 112th by the entrance to the school field) and casual/on-call.  Despite our efforts and multiple job postings,  we have had a very difficult time filling these positions and are hoping our DG families  might be able to help.  If you know anyone who might be interested in being a Crossing Guard, please pass this information along.   This is a paid position ($19.91 per hour), and is one hour per day – half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the afternoon.  It would be perfect for someone who is retired and/or just looking for something to earn a little extra money that doesn’t require a lot of time.  If you are interested, or you know someone who might be, please email our Vice Principal, Mme Hamilton, or call the school office (604-581-6185).

PAC Fundraisers:

Neufeld Farms Fundraiser – Orders Due Oct 30th

The PAC is currently offering a chance to stock your freezers from Neufeld Farms.  Fill up your freezer with quick meals that will keep tummies happy and save you time.  Orders will be delivered to the school for you to pick up at 6pm on November 8th. Some money from every order comes back to the PAC to help support the school community in a variety of ways. Parents in the past have enjoyed the many options, from pre-made cookie dough to frozen ground beef. Check out the link to see if there is something your family is interested in.

Return-it Express

PAC has created a school fundraising account. To participate, simply bring your containers to the depot in sealed, clear bags, and enter the registered phone number, 604-581-6185, into the Express kiosk. You will be prompted to select the number of bags you’re dropping off, the kiosk will automatically print the same number of sticker tags displaying our PACs unique Express account code. Tag each of your bags with a sticker tag and drop the bags off in the designated Express drop-off area to be counted. Have you ever thought of Hosting an International Student?

Delta School District International Programs needs more homestay families for international students coming to Delta School District in February 2024.  These students will arrive from all over the world and have a strong desire to be in Delta.
We are also looking ahead to September 2024 and short-term Summer 2024 Programs for younger students. For many of the younger students who enrol in the Summer Programs, it is their first time travelling without their parents. We are seeking caring homes wanting to show these students how beautiful summers are in the Lower Mainland. They come for 3-week programs. The first two weeks are full days at school and the third week consists of mornings in the classroom and afternoons on outings with our staff.
Hosting a student comes with a reimbursement of $1,100 per month for expenses. Multiple students from different nationalities can be hosted in one home. International students are looking for a family connection and being a part of a family during their stay in Delta. Their school year study periods range from 3 months to half a school year, to a full school year, to multiple years.
If you are not able to host but know of a family who can, please send them our way. There are referral bonuses available for referring families.
