Did you know that our DG Logo is designed by a local artist, Bryce Williams? Bryce is a Haida and Coast Salish artist from Tsawwassen First Nation. His Haida name is Yaahl Iiwaans which translates to Big Raven. His ancestral coast Salish name is texwilem. Bryce works in various mediums such as carving cedar and alder, painting designs on canvas’s and weavings and creating designs for tattoos and fabrications. He is also a singer and dancer. Bryce strongly believes that being an artist means that connecting with your culture and learning as much as you can about the song and dance and stories and ceremonial protocol’s is crucial. Bryce also served as Chief of the Tsawwassen First Nation from 2012 to 2019. First elected at just 23 years old, he was one of youngest chiefs in BC’s history. We are honoured to have Bryce’s design as our beautiful school logo!
Bryce’s artwork can also be seen in the Tsawwassen Mills mall and, hopefully soon, on a t-shirt or hoodie in your closet!
For more information, including the sizing chart, please refer to the notice previously sent home.
Order deadline is October 18th! Don’t miss out!
Early Dismissal October 15th and 16th
A reminder that students will be dismissed at noon, October 15th and at 2:00pm on October 16th. Please ensure you make arrangements for early pick-up on these days, and/or let your daycare providers know.
As school staff will be busy with conferences, it is imperative that students are picked up on time.
Dressing for the weather
There’s a noticeable chill in the air and we know the rainy season will soon be upon us. As the weather gets cold and wet, please make sure that kids come dressed appropriately for the outdoors in all sorts of weather (eg. jacket, waterproof/water resistant footwear, hat, gloves, etc…) . Please expect that kids will go out for recess and lunch, unless there is extreme weather.
Does your child have a full change of clothes at school?
VERY IMPORTANT – all students (yes, even Grade 7s!) are required to have a spare change of clothes (socks, pants, T-shirt) at school. That way, if a students gets wet/muddy or happens to slip on the wet field, they can change into dry, comfortable clothing for the remainder of the day.
Spare clothing should be in a ziplock bag, labelled with your child’s name
Monthly Focus – October
Each month, at Devon Gardens, we choose a focus area (September was Manners). This month, we are working on Sympathy, Empathy and Compassion. In addition to learning about this in their classrooms with their teachers, we also share information and reminders with students via our daily announcements.
Parent Teacher Conferences – October 15th & 16th
As parents of elementary school children, you play a crucial role in your child’s education. Your involvement and collaboration with your child’s teachers can make a significant difference in their academic and personal growth. One essential way to foster this collaboration is through parent-teacher conferences.
Why is it important to attend parent/teacher conferences?
1. A Partnership for Success: Parents and Teachers – by working together, parents and teachers can create a supportive environment where children can thrive academically and socially.
2. Understanding Your Child’s Progress – parent-teacher conferences offer a unique opportunity to gain insight into your child’s progress and development. During these meetings, teachers can provide you with important information regarding your child’s strengths, and areas where they may need extra support. This information is invaluable in helping you understand your child’s learning style and their individual needs.
3. Addressing Concerns Early – one of the key benefits of parent-teacher conferences is the chance to address any concerns or questions you may have about your child’s education. Teachers are there to listen, provide guidance, and collaborate with you to support your child’s success at school.
4. Setting Goals Together – during conferences, parents and teachers can discuss academic, behavioural and social goals for the child and ways that home and school can work together. When parents and teachers align their efforts toward these objectives, the child receives consistent support and messaging, leading to greater success.
5. Open Communication is Key – effective communication is the cornerstone of a successful parent-teacher partnership. Parents should feel comfortable reaching out to teachers throughout the school year, not just during formal conferences. Teachers, in turn, value and encourage open communication with parents. If you have questions, concerns, or simply want to check in on your child’s progress, don’t hesitate to contact the teacher. Remember, you are a team, and working together is the best way to support your child’s education.
6. Additional Opportunities to Meet – While formal parent-teacher conferences are typically scheduled in October each school year (and student-led conferences in February) both teachers and parents can request a meeting at any time.
Parent-teacher conferences are a vital component of your child’s educational journey. They provide a platform for parents and teachers to collaborate, understand, and support your child’s growth. Together, as a team, you can help your child achieve greater success academically and personally. We look forward to seeing all of our families at conferences on October 15th and 16th. If, for some reason, neither of those dates work for you, please reach out to your child’s teacher to arrange another time to meet.
This week, Ms Chahal will be sending out an instructions on how to book your parent/teacher conference times. Appointments will be booked through Parent Connect.
Please make sure you are able to log on to Parent Connect. If you are having difficulty, or need assistance, please refer to these instructions. If you are still having difficulty, you can also contact the school for assistance by phone at 604-581-6185, or email the school’s general mailbox at devongardens.elem@deltaschools.ca

Emergency Preparedness Fee
Last year, the school district introduced an annual $10 Emergency Preparedness Fee to help ensure every school is equipped with essential emergency supplies – such as food, water, and first aid items – in the event of a major incident like an earthquake (see letter from May 2024). As of mid-June, we have collected more than $125,000, which is already being used to ensure each school is stocked with emergency food and water reserves.
Our ultimate goal is to maintain at least a three-day supply of food and water for every student. This annual fee, due at the beginning of each school year, plays a vital role in helping us meet that goal and allows us to replace supplies as they expire.
For the 2025/2026 school year, families will be asked to pay this $10/student fee by the end of October. If your family requires financial support in relation to this fee, please contact the school office. Discretion will be maintained. Please watch for a letter, coming home, this week, with more information.
If your family requires financial support in relation to this fee, please contact the school office. Discretion will be maintained.
