Dear DG Families,
It was great to see so many families at our Open House on Thursday evening! Thank you for participating in our sticker activity/scavenger hunt. This week we will be contacting those families who won a prize!
Please take the time to log in to Parent Connect and to update your forms. It is important that the information that we have for you is up to date. As well, parent connect is the portal that you will need to use when booking parent teacher interviews, which will be happening soon (more info to come)
Please see the link for details.
Parent/Teacher Conferences Survey will close this Wednesday
If you have not yet completed the short survey regarding parent/teacher conferences (and whether or not you would like a virtual option), please do so by tomorrow (Monday, Sept 26th). Your input will assist us in planning our up-coming parent/teacher conferences – October 12th & 13th
Please watch for more information, coming soon, about how to sign up for your child’s conference (via Parent Connect)
Regular attendance is fundamental to success at school. Occasionally, students must miss classes for unavoidable reasons such as illness or emergencies. Student absences must be reported directly to the office, rather than through your child’s teacher. As such, if your child will be absent from school, please remember to either call our office at 604-581-6185, or email the school’s general mailbox at firstname.lastname@example.org , to let us know. In your message, please also let us know the reason of your child’s absence. If your child is away due to illness, please also let us know your child’s symptoms; particularly in the case of communicable diseases such as respiratory infections, strep throat, chickenpox, stomach flu, etc…
It is recommended that medical, dental and other appointments be made outside of school time, however we understand this is not always possible. If you child needs to leave school early for an appointment on a particular day, please communicate this information to the teacher ahead of time (eg. send a note to the teacher in your child’s planner). This way we can have your child ready and waiting for you at the office, where they will be signed out. When returning from the appointment students must sign in at the office.
Terry Fox Run
Devon Gardens will be participating in the annual Terry Fox Run again this year! Our run date is Wednesday, September 28th! Please have your child wear running shoes and clothes that allow for easy movement on this day. We also encourage students who want to, to bring in a “Toonie for Terry” which will go toward cancer research. Thank you for your support!
Thursday, September 29th the Delta School District will be observing Orange Shirt Day. Staff and students are encouraged to wear orange in remembrance and respect to the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada
Between the 1860s and the 1990s, approximately 150,000 Métis, Inuit and First Nations children were sent to church-run schools residential schools. Residential schools harmed Indigenous children by removing them from their families, forcing them to speak English or French instead of their ancestral languages, disconnecting them from their culture and traditions and forcing them to adopt Christianity in order to assimilate into Canadian society. Learn more about the origins of Orange Shirt Day:
As you know, Friday, September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and schools will be closed. This is a day for all of us to take some time to reflect on the truth of Canada’s past and the harmful legacy of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools and ways we can move towards reconciliation. Here are some ways we can participate mark the day:
- Wear an orange shirt or something orange (if you’re buying a shirt, make sure the proceeds support Indigenous groups)
- Take time to learn more about Canada’s Indian Residential Schools (there are books and resources below)
- Talk to children about residential schools
- Read or re-read the 94 Calls to Action from the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
- Support Indigenous-led organizations in their continuing work on this and other issues
