Dear DG Families,
Have you logged onto Parent Connect?
Most students have all of their online permissions done (great job, DG!). An extra shout out to Mr. Mok’s, Mme Lovat’s and Mme Sisson/Mme Pasieka’s classes for having all of their forms done! Way to go!
If you haven’t yet completed the online forms for your child, please do so asap.
Also, in Parent Connect, please double check the contact information we have on file for your child (home and cell phone numbers, email addresses, emergency contacts, etc…). If any changes are needed, please contact the school by phone 604-581-6185, or email the school’s general mailbox at devongardens.elem@deltaschools.ca
Parent connect is the portal that you will need to use when booking parent teacher interviews, which are coming up soon. Next week, Ms Chahal will be sending an email letting you know that the online appointments can be booked. Prior to this, it’s important that you’ve confirmed you can get into Parent Connect.

Orange Shirt Day
On Monday, September 29th, we will be observing Orange Shirt Day at school. Staff and students are encouraged to wear orange in remembrance and respect to the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada.
Truth and Reconciliation Walk – September 29th
On Monday, September 29, as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting Indigenous Reconciliation, the District will host its second annual Walk for Truth and Reconciliation. Students and staff across the district will participate in a walk to honour the legacy of Residential school survivors and raise awareness about the importance of Reconciliation in Canada.
At Devon Gardens, we will wear our orange t-shirts as we participate in this walk in our area. This is a symbolic gesture as part of the District’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
The walk will go ahead on Monday, rain or shine, so please ensure students come dressed for the weather.

Did you know that our DG Logo is designed by a local artist, Bryce Williams? Bryce is a Haida and Coast Salish artist from Tsawwassen First Nation. His Haida name is Yaahl Iiwaans which translates to Big Raven. His ancestral coast Salish name is texwilem. Bryce works in various mediums such as carving cedar and alder, painting designs on canvas’s and weavings and creating designs for tattoos and fabrications. He is also a singer and dancer. Bryce strongly believes that being an artist means that connecting with your culture and learning as much as you can about the song and dance and stories and ceremonial protocol’s is crucial. Bryce also served as Chief of the Tsawwassen First Nation from 2012 to 2019. First elected at just 23 years old, he was one of youngest chiefs in BC’s history. We are honoured to have Bryce’s design as our beautiful school logo!
Bryce’s artwork can also be seen in the Tsawwassen Mills mall and, hopefully soon, on a t-shirt or hoodie in your closet!
For more information, including the sizing chart, please refer to the notice sent home last week
Order deadline is October 18th! Don’t miss out!
Tuesday is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
A reminder that Tuesday, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Schools are closed this day but this is not merely a day off; it is an opportunity to educate ourselves on the truth around residential schools and the ongoing impact of colonialism on Indigenous people. It is also a time to honour the children who died in residential schools and their survivors, their families, and their communities, and to engage it steps towards reconciliation.
If you’re wondering what you can do to recognize and honour the day, here are a few simple steps towards Reconciliation:
- Discover whose traditional territory you’re living or working on and then learn about those Nations. Both the Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) (https://tsawwassenfirstnation.com/) and Musqueam Indian Band (https://www.musqueam.bc.ca/) websites have information about who they are and their histories.
- Check out the 94 Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (https://ehprnh2mwo3.exactdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf) Ask yourself if there is one Call that you can commit to acting on.

As many of us celebrate the back-to-school season, stop, and reflect on why it may not be easy for everyone. Find out more about Phyllis Webstad’s story (https://orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story/)

Dressing for the weather
There’s a noticeable chill in the air and we know the rainy season will soon be upon us. As the weather gets cold and wet, please make sure that kids come dressed appropriately for the outdoors in all sorts of weather (eg. jacket, waterproof/water resistant footwear, hat, gloves, etc…) . Please expect that kids will go out for recess and lunch, unless there is extreme weather.
VERY IMPORTANT – all students (yes, even Grade 7s!) are required to have a spare change of clothes (socks, pants, T-shirt) at school. That way, if a students gets wet/muddy or happens to slip on the wet field, they can change into dry, comfortable clothing for the remainder of the day.
Spare clothing should be in a ziplock bag, labelled with your child’s name
