Week at a Glance Dec 9 – 13

Dear DG Families,

Christmas Concert Information:

  • Date & times: As you know, teachers and classes are woking hard preparing for our Christmas Concert. We will have two shows on Tuesday, Dec 17th, at 1:30pm and 7:00 pm.   Seating is limited so we ask that you attend only one show.

  • Student participation in both concerts:  We know that parents are eagerly looking forward to seeing their children perform in the concert and teachers are working hard to ensure they will be ready to put on a great show.   It’s discouraging when teachers are hearing from their students that they won’t be attending the evening concert, especially when the reason students provide is because they “don’t feel like it”.

We understand that December is a busy time, but unless there is an unavoidable conflict (and, in that case, please notify your child’s teacher in advance), we need students’ participation in both the afternoon and the evening concerts to ensure audiences at both concerts see a great show.   For the evening concert, students need to report to their classrooms at 6:30 (once the doors are open)

  • Seating and Tickets:  As in previous years, each family has been issued only 2 tickets for the evening show.  These are required for admission and will be collected at the door.  These tickets were sent home with the youngest/only child on Thursday, Dec 5th.  If you did not receive your tickets, please contact your child’s teacher.

We are asking families who don’t need one, or both, of their tickets to please return them to the school so that they might be offered to families who request an additional ticket.

Should you wish to request an additional ticket,  please email Ms. Tee at stee@deltasd.bc.ca   Please note, there is no guarantee that extra tickets will be available.  Any that we do have will be given out first come, first served.

Tickets are not required for the afternoon show. We encourage those who can, to attend the afternoon show as we anticipate there will be more seating available.  Also, if you would like to bring more than 2 guests to see the concert, please make arrangements to come to the afternoon performance.

For each of the concerts, doors will open 30 min before showtime (1:00 for the afternoon concert and 6:30 for the evening concert).

  • “Best Seats” Contest:Our “best seats” contest closed on Thursday.  Thank you to everyone who participated.   The money raised will be used for concert related expenses (tickets, props, lights, etc….).     We will be notifying the winners of the “Best Seats” contest, by phone, this week

  • CAN you help us collect donations for Deltassist?  We do not charge a fee for concert tickets; however, a food bank donation would be very much appreciated.

Adventure Smart Assembly

On Monday, Dec 9,  students will be learning about how to stay safe outdoors.  For our primary divisions, the Adventure Smart group will be teaching students about staying in one spot when lost.  Our intermediate classes will learn more ways to stay safe outdoors.  Mrs. Goldman, our librarian, will also be sharing with students some of the outdoors and survival themed books in our Library

Canned Food Drive

With the holiday season quickly approaching, Devon Gardens is collecting canned food donations for Deltassist, to support our community and help those in need during over the holidays.  Please bring in your donations of canned goods to your child’s classroom (please check expiry dates). We will also be collecting canned goods at our Christmas concert.  Our final day of collecting canned goods will be on Tuesday, December 17th.   Donations of canned goods will be accepted at both the afternoon and the evening Christmas Concerts

As you know, we are again working with another school in Delta to provide families in need with some Christmas hampers this year.

Our sister school will provide hampers for our families, and in turn we are collecting items to help their families. We do this in the spirit of trying to keep things private and confidential for the families who are in need. Please have a look at the descriptions of the two families below and please consider bringing in donations to help with our hamper efforts. We would like to get the hampers to them by Monday, Dec 16th.  Please send all donations to the office.  If you have your items purchased already, please send them to the office.

Again our sincerest thank you!

Emergency Preparedness Supplies

Just like families and individuals, schools must be prepared to take care of themselves (and any students and staff who are unable to get home) for a minimum of 72 hours after an earthquake or other major incident.   Our  Emergency Preparedness bin (the big blue bin on the field) is fairly well stocked, but we are missing some important items.   We have submitted an order for the missing items and the $5 EP donation requested in October (more info here) will assist with the costs.   However, only about 1/3 of families have sent in their donation.  If you haven’t already donated it’s not too late.  Donations can be sent to your child’s teacher or dropped off directly at the office.

In our emergency planning, we know we need to be able to keep students safe, fed, hydrated, dry and warm for up to 72 hours.   But we would also need to keep them occupied.

To help with this, we are looking for donations of things like gently used board games, puzzles, Lego, card games, etc… (things that don’t take up too much space, or require power/batteries).  So far, we have received a couple of donations.  But, we could definitely use some more!  If you have items at home you are no longer using that might be suitable, please consider donating them to our EP program.  For games/puzzles, please double check there are no missing pieces.  Donations can be dropped off at the school office.

We greatly appreciate your assistance in purchasing the supplies needed to keep everyone safe in an Emergency situation.

For questions or more information, please contact  Ms Tee stee@deltasd.bc.ca or Mme Greenhalgh egreenhalgh@deltasd.bc.ca

Cold Weather

With winter upon us, we are reminding parents to ensure that students are dressed to play outside (eg. gloves, toques, jackets, boots).  Please also label your child’s items, especially gloves, so that any lost items can make it back to their rightful owners
