Dear DG Families,
Student Led Conferences
- We will still have the one hour early dismissal (1:50- primary classes and 1:55 pm Intermediate classes) on January 27st, 2022. Teachers will use the early dismissal time to work on the take home conferences that will be sent home the following week. The format may look different from teacher to teacher, but in general, you can expect your child to bring home a portfolio/some sample of their work that they will share with you while they discuss their learning this year.
- The following week, teachers will help students prepare their take-home conferences and on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022 students will take their conference portfolios home. Just as you would do in a traditional student-led conference, parents will be asked to conference with their child about his/her learning. Your child’s teacher will provide some guiding questions for you to discuss with your child and will ask for some feedback, from both you and your child.
- When your child brings home their portfolio, please set aside some time to review it with them and talk with them about the learning they’ve done so far his year.As we know that families are busy, we will ask that you do this sometime between February 3rdand February 9th.
- Portfolios and feedback forms will be due back to the teacher by Thursday, February 10th.

Reporting Student Absences
If your child will be absent from school, the school policy for reporting an absence is that parents MUST notify the office directly. You can do this by either:
- calling the school (604-581-6185) and following the prompts to leave a message
- by sending an email to the general school email address devongardens.elem@deltaschools.ca
In your message, please also let us know the reason of your child’s absence. If your child is away due to illness, please also let us know your child’s symptoms.
Please note – Just advising the teacher, or another staff member, is not sufficient.
The Ministry is requiring that schools track absences (especially student illnesses) very carefully and we’ve now had several instances where absences have been missed because the absence information was communicated to someone other than the office. For example when dropping off their other child, a parent informs a staff member of the sibling’s absence. a parent emailed the teacher regarding a student’s absence but the teacher didn’t see the email until after school, or in another situation the teacher didn’t see the email because they were also absent that day.
For this reason, please report your child’s absence directly to the office, via phone call or email. If you like, you may also advise the classroom teacher of your child’s absence, but the requirement is that parents report their child’s absence to the office.
Please ensure your child comes prepared for the day & dressed for the weather
We still have many students arriving at school unprepared for the day. Please make sure your child brings the following items with them to school:
