Week at a Glance January 11 – 15

Dear DG Families,

Winter Weather – Change of Clothes

Living on the West Coast, rain is a given – most days, it’s raining, has just rained or is about to rain! Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather and to be outside in the weather.    It is highly unlikely that students will stay in for recess of lunch, unless the weather is exceptionally awful.  We know that kids need fresh air and movement breaks throughout the day.  It’s good for their learning and for their health.  We also know that if kids are well prepared to be outside in the rain they actually enjoy it. As long as they stay dry and warm there is a great deal of fun to be had in all kinds of weather. To be prepared to be outside in the rain it is important for your child to have appropriate clothing such as:

  • A rain jacket
  • Rubber boots so they can enjoy the puddles
  • Rain pants
  • An umbrella
  • A rain hat or coat with a hood
  • A change of clothes (sweatpants, sock, underwear, t-shirt) – in a plastic bag, labeled with your child’s name

ALL students (from K-grade 7), need an extra set of clothes to change into.  We are finding that lots of our students are getting wet or muddy from being outside.  As we are not able to accept drop offs during the day, students who come in from recess totally soaked and/or covered in mud are usually sent home early for the day if they don’t have dry clothes to change into (some kids have figured this out and are getting muddy, on purpose, for this reason!).   While we do have a few spare items of clean clothing* to lend kids in an emergency, we might not have something to fit your child.  It’s best if kids have their own clothes to change into.
* If we have lent your child dry clothing, we ask that you please wash it and send it back to school

We have student led conferences scheduled for Thursday, January 21st.  Due to COVID restrictions, we will need to change how student led conferences are typically scheduled and run and we are in the process of finalizing these details.   Please stay tuned for more info to come (ASAP)

School Drop-Off and Pick-Up

We know that school drop-off and pick-up are very busy times at schools and it can be challenging for students and their families to maintain two metres’ distance from others. We also recognize that school drop-off and pick-up have traditionally provided an opportunity for parents to connect with each other. However, given the high number of COVID-19 cases in our province currently and the public health orders aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19, we are asking for your support with the following:

• Please keep two metres’ distance at all times from others who are not from your household
• Please wear a mask in high traffic areas and when physical distancing is not possible. This is good modelling for students.
• We ask that you stand back from the school exits and let your child come to you to reduce the risk of interaction with others.
• Please remind your child not to play with others from outside of their cohort, or gather with other students before and after school.
• Please leave the school grounds promptly after dropping off or picking up your child.

Please do not hang around after school to socialize with other families or to let your kids play on the playground.

Many thanks for your co-operation with these measures.
