Week at a Glance January 18-22

Dear DG Families,

Parking Lot Safety –

At entry and dismissal times, we have noticed that some students are cutting through the staff parking lot (walking, running and even zooming through on bicycles & scooters!).  This is very dangerous & there have been some near misses, lately!  When making your way to the student line up areas (when approaching from the front the school), please either walk around the end of the gym by the undercover area or along Downs Road, rather than cutting through the staff parking lot.  If travelling from one side to the other, please walk around the school at the back (on the playground side) or use the path along the front grassy area, where the bike racks are.  PLEASE help us by reminding your child(ren) to use their road sense when they come and go from school by using the cross walks and staying clear of the staff parking lot.  We have made some announcements to remind students as well.

COVID SAFETY REMINDERS

Public Health Order

By order and direction of the Provincial Health Officer (PHO), our public health order has been extended.  As such, please ensure that you do not interact with others outside of your household, or allow your child to play with others from outside of their cohort.  This includes playing on school grounds before/after school.

We know that school drop-off and pick-up are very busy times at schools and it can be challenging for students and their families to maintain two metres distance from others.  We also recognize that school drop-off and pickup have traditionally provided an opportunity for parents to connect with each other.  However, given the high number of COVID-19 cases in our province currently and the public health orders aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19, we are asking for your support with the following:

• Please keep two metres distance at all times from others who are not from your household.

• Please wear a mask in high traffic areas. This is good modelling for students (while there is no requirement for students to wear masks, they are are encouraged to)

• We ask that you stand back from the school exits and let your child come to you to reduce the risk of interaction with others.

• Please remind your child not to play with others from outside of their cohort, or gather with other students before and after school.

• Please leave the school grounds promptly after dropping off or picking up your child.

Resending the email previously sent by Mme Greenhalgh

When we set our 2020-2021 school calendar last Spring, we weren’t sure how long the pandemic restrictions would last and we had originally scheduled student led conferences for Thursday, January 21st.  With our current COVID restrictions, we are unable to host our traditional student-led conferences (where groups of students and their families come to the school at a selected time to look over student work).

As with many events during COVID, we are needing to pivot and make adjustments to figure out how we can still hold student led conferences while following COVID rules.  Student led conferences are valuable to help parents become actively involved in their child’s learning, so we did not want to cancel them.  We will still have student led conferences – just in a different way. The format may look different from teacher to teacher, but in general, you can expect your child to bring home a portfolio/some samples of their work that they will share with you while they discuss their learning and set goals for the coming months.

We will still have the one hour early dismissal on Thursday, January 21st, 2021.  Primary students will be dismissed at 1:55 p.m. and Intermediate students will be dismissed at 2:05 p.m.  Teachers will use the early dismissal time to work on the take home conferences.  The following week, teachers will then help students prepare their take-home conferences and on Thursday, January 28th, students will take their conference portfolios home.

Just as you would do in a traditional student-led conference, parents will be asked to conference with their child about his/her learning.  Your child’s teacher will provide some guiding questions for you to discuss with your child and the teacher will ask for some feedback, from both you and your child.    Please set aside some time to see your child’s work and the learning that has taken place this year.  As we know that families are busy, we will ask that you do this sometime between January 28th and February 3rd.   Portfolios and feedback forms will be due back to the teacher by Thursday, February 4th.
