Week at a Glance Oct 18 – 22

Dear DG Families,

Thank you to all our families for “virtually” attending their parent teacher conference times.  We know that the shift to online platforms is new for some of us (last year via Zoom and this year via MS Teams)- a sincere thank you for learning alongside us.

Road Safety

When dropping off your child to school, please do not stop your car in the driving lanes of Russell Drive, or stop your car to drop off your child at the crosswalk. With one lane going in each direction of Russell Drive, it blocks the flow of traffic when cars stop in the driving lane to let children out. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe at drop off and pick up times.

Fall weather

Just a reminder that as the weather gets cold and wet, please make sure that kids come dressed appropriately for the weatherPlease expect that kids will go out for recess and lunch, unless there is extreme weather. Please also be reminded that we do not have the capacity to allow kids come in before our morning bell.   Due to COVID restrictions, ALL students (yes, even grade 7s) should have a change of clothes at school.  Sitting in wet clothing is uncomfortable 🙁

Dressing for the weather is also a matter of safety in case of an Emergency ….   Ensuring students come dressed for the weather isn’t just important for playing outside.  It’s also important in case of an emergency requiring evacuation of the building.

Terry Fox Foundation

Thank you to all of you who donated by bringing in toonies for Terry. We raised a total of $433.55 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Way to go, DG!

Student Crossing Guard Schedule

Thank you to all of our Intermediate students who have shown an interest in being a crossing guard.  Student Crossing Guards are an important part of the Traffic Safety program at our school and they receive training from the Delta Police.

Most of the Crossing Guards who have handed in their permission forms have now been scheduled (please see the schedule link below).  If your child is unable to cover his/her shift we are asking them to find a replacement.

If your child has handed in their permission form and has not yet been scheduled, it could be because the partner listed has not handed their form in. Please be patient with all of us while we update the schedule as we get permission forms in to the office.

Crossing Guard Schedule

If your child would like to be a Crossing Guard, it’s not too late!   They can see Ms. Tee for more information and submit a permission form (see link below).

Cops for Cancer – Guessing Jar Challengeguess sweets in the jar - Clip Art Library

Our first Cops for Cancer fundraiser – “The Guessing Jar Challenge”, is in full swing!  We have prepared a variety of jars containing different amounts of fun stuff (individually wrapped candies, toys, etc….).  Students can view these in the display case in the downstairs hallway.  For only $2 a guess, students may buy a ticket to guess how many objects they think are in a “jar” for a chance to win!   Students may enter as many times as they wish.  The closest guess for each jar, wins!     This is a great way for students to practice their estimation skills and help the Cops for Cancer Team raise funds for pediatric cancer research, all at the same time!    Guessing Tickets are available from classroom teachers and from the office.

There are currently over 630 000 participants in BC registered for “The Great ShakeOut”, taking place October 21st, and our school is among them!    “The Great ShakeOut” is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer in case of an earthquake (“Drop, Cover and Hold On”), although we don’t just do this once a year.   We practice this emergency procedure, along with others such as fire drills and shelter in place procedures, several times throughout the school year.     In addition to participating in the Great ShakeOut, every fall we also review our school’s emergency plan and supplies.   Families are asked for a small annual donation to help us keep our emergency bin (the big metal bin by the gravel field) well stocked (please refer to the  letter sent home on Friday).  Thank you for sending in your donations   Your contributions are a vital part of our Emergency Prep program!

This is also a great time to review your own family’s Emergency Preparedness plan. Part of that plan should include who (an adult) would be able to pick up your children from school  in the event that an emergency situation (eg. earthquake) prevented you from getting to the school. On parent connect, this person is your designated “emergency release” (you can have more than one) and is the only person(s), other than a parent or guardian, to whom we can legally release a child in the event of an emergency closure.    A reminder that your “Emergency Release” is not necessarily the same person as your “Emergency Contact”, although it could be (ideally, your “Emergency Release” should be within walking distance of the school).   To review, again, the difference between Emergency Release and Emergency Contact, and to add/update an “Emergency Release” contact, please refer to this page on our website.   The  “Emergency Release” information is one of the few sections on Parent Connect that parents can update themselves.

Thinking about Emergency Preparedness can be overwhelming.   The “Get Prepared” website has some great information and a step-by-step guide for putting together your family’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, in about 20 minutes.    The “Great ShakeOut” website also has some great information you might want to review, such as what to do if an earthquake hits while you are driving, or in a store.

Individual Photo Retakes Day

Our individual photo retakes day is on Thursday, October 28th. If your child is needing a photo retake, please send a note to your child’s classroom teacher via email or through the planners. This helps us out from having all students, especially our young primary students, deciding themselves that they would like to get their photos retaken.
