May 20th – 23rd, 2025

Dear DG Families,

We hope you had a wonderful long weekend!

Wednesday Homework Club

Starting this week, on Wednesday from 1:45 pm – 2:45 pm, Tina Evanson (Ms. T) will be offering homework club in the Library.
Ms. Evanson is an Educational Assistant at Devon Gardens and is happy to help students who need a little extra time or help to complete their work as we wrap up the school year.
Ms. Evanson is able to support students with homework in English. Students who have work en français are welcome to attend Homework Club but French language support will not be available at this time.
If you would like to have your child attend Homework Club, please write a note in their planner on Wednesdays.  Ms. Evanson will be checking planners for parent permission as students arrive at the library.   Please note – Students who do not have a note in their planner for Homework Club will be expected to head home at 1:45pm, per usual.   We will not be calling parents to ask permission that they stay.
At the end of Homework Club (2:45pm), Ms T will accompany students to the undercover area where they will be dismissed.  Please meet them there.

2025-2026 School Year

We are beginning the process of planning for next school year.   If you are moving and are not planning to return to Devon Gardens in the fall, please make sure that you let our office know.   Even if you have let your child’s teacher know, we still need you to contact the office directly.   You can do this by either calling Ms Chahal at the school office (604-581-6185) or emailing her at devongardens.elem@deltaschools.ca

2025-2026 Class Placement Information

In the coming weeks, we will start to tentatively look at next year’s organization and possible class placements for students.

Some Things to Know about Our Process:

Class placements are important decisions and something that teachers consider very carefully.

FACTORS & CONSIDERATIONS: Assigning students to classes is a very complex task that takes into consideration a variety of factors, including: learning styles and strengths, what a student is able to achieve in relation to the goals of the curriculum, degree of independence in work habits, social and personal needs, age and physical maturity, previous placements, gender balance of class, etc….

The number of staff members assigned to our school is decided by the Superintendent’s Office and is based on projected student enrolment. Enrolment estimates and class size guidelines affect the configuration of classes, which may also necessitate a particular organizational configuration (i.e. whether or not we have combined or “split” classes and the number of students, per grade, in the class).

SCHOOL-BASED DECISIONS: The professional staff is in contact with children in the school setting for 30 hours a week. Your child’s present teacher, along with other educators who work with your child, have a year’s worth of current, rich information and insight about the conditions under which your child learns best. Therefore, decisions around where to place students are determined through school-based, team decisions, based on their recommendations.

INPUT FROM PARENTS: As our partners in education, parents may also have important information to assist us with the placement of students. Parents are welcome to share with the school personal, educational, or social information that could affect their child’s placement. Our staff will keep in mind this information, along with the above considerations, when building classes.

If you have information about your child and the kind of learning environment in which she/he best works and learns, and you would like to share this information with our staff, please fill in the “Parent Information” form by clicking on the link below.  This is optional.     Please complete the form no later than Friday, May 23rd, 2025

It is important to note that it is not possible for parents to choose their child’s teacher or make requests regarding other students. Teachers who are currently on staff may not be here next year, may not be assigned the same grade, or may not teach a class configuration that meets your child’s learning needs. Whatever the scenario, we strive to place your child in a warm, caring environment that will maximize his/her learning potential.

Should you have information you wish to share with us, please fill in the form by Friday, May 23rd, 2025.  Please fill in 1 form for every child.

Please note, parents are not required to do this.  It’s optional.

Parent/Guardian Appreciation Day – Friday, May 30th

Please mark the date!   We hope you will be able to stop by DG on Friday, May 30th, before school, for our Parent/Guardian Appreciation Event.   Whether you’re able to stay for a bit of a visit, or just pick up a to-go goodie bag on your way, we look forward to seeing you to say “hello and thank you” to all our parents and guardians!

We will have stations with staff around the school areas (by the undercover area, by the side door, by the courtyard, and by 112th Street) to greet you.

Summer Volunteers Needed to Water our Garden Area!

You may have seen the Western Red Cedar tree and the planter boxes on the front grass area of the school.  This area is well-used as an outdoor learning space during the school year and both the tree and the garden boxes require regular watering.   While school is in session, teachers and students take care of this.  During the summer, though, we need your help to keep these areas watered.

We will put together a schedule of volunteers to take turns doing the watering so that it’s a manageable task (many hands make light work).  You will have access to water and a hose at the school, and we will show you exactly what needs to be done before the end of the school year.

If you are willing to help out with watering this summer (particularly if you live nearby!), please email Mme Hamilton at hhamilton@deltaschools.ca   And, if you’ve helped with watering the garden in previous summers, you’re now an expert, so we’d love to have you on the team again this year!

RAFFLE BASKETS

Reminder – This is the Last Week for Family Fun Night Raffle Baskets Donations Family Fun Night is just around the corner (Friday, June 6th!).  Not only is Family Fun Night a great community building event, it’s also a major fundraiser for the PAC.

Funds generated through Family Fun Night help support a variety of initiatives at our school (eg. library books, equipment for our playground pals bin, classroom funds for“extras”, support for the school garden, and so much MORE!).

One of the main events at Family Fun Night is the basket raffle.  For the past month, students have been asked to bring in donations that will make up the various baskets. Each class has been assigned a theme and students are asked to bring in donations that fit their theme.  If you’re not sure which theme your child’s classroom has been given, please refer to the Raffle Basket letters sent home at the end of April.

Can’t find the notice or remember the theme for your child’s class?  Themes are listed here, on the notices page of our school website.

Thank you to all those families who have already donated items.  At the moment there are fewer donations than anticipated so we’re hoping that more items will come in this week.  A reminder, that as an incentive, the classes who bring in the highest total value of basket items (top primary and top intermediate), will win ice cream treats, courtesy of the PAC!

Donations will be collected until Thursday, May 22nd.

If you’d prefer to make a cash donation rather than sending in an “item”; that’s ok, too! Please send your donation in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, division and a brief description (something like: Attention DGPAC –  Family Fun Night donation for Div ____ basket)

Your contributions are important! The proceeds from the basket raffle go directly back to the school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the PAC at pacdevongardens@gmail.com

URGENT call for volunteers! To keep Family Fun Night running smoothly, we need community support and participation! Thank you again to those who have already signed up. There are still a few open spaces for volunteers that NEED to be filled!  We have kept the time commitments between 1-2 hours, so this still allows for plenty of time for you to enjoy family fun with your kids!

Please check out the sign up sheet linked here  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bnClhP57MpfCWsNn4IW38Oo-0xigPO8EnqIU73bbnOE/edit?usp=drivesdk

On the volunteer sign-up spreadsheet, there is also a sign up sheet for Sports Day, June 13th (on a separate tab, look at the bottom of the page)!  Please sign up for either (or both!) events if you are able!
