Montessori Philosophy

The Montessori Method of teaching aims for the fullest possible development of the whole child, ultimately preparing him for life’s many rich experiences. The physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual development of the child is intertwined. Development in one area influences and supports the other areas. It is not beneficial to focus on the development of one aspect in isolation. The focus is on developing the whole child into a well rounded human being who will become a contributing member of society.

The basic aim of the Montessori approach is to help children acquire the confidence and motivation they need to fulfill their own best potential.  This is done by preparing an environment which makes activities available that support children’s development, build on their interests and nurture their enthusiasm.  Everything in a Montessori classroom has a specific use or purpose. There is nothing in the prepared environment that the child cannot see or touch. All of the furniture and equipment is scaled down to the child’s size and is within easy reach.

A quality Montessori classroom has a busy, productive atmosphere where joy and respect abound. Within such an enriched environment, freedom, responsibility, and social and intellectual development spontaneously flourish.

Montessori Environment:

  • Does not have individual desks or a set seating plan
  • Provides hands on concrete learning materials
