Week at a Glance Feb 17 – 21

Dear DG Families,

Happy Family Day to all our families!  We hope you are enjoying the extra day to spend with one another.

Reporting Student Absences

If your child will be absent from school, please remember to call our office at 604-581-6185 to let us know.  In your message, please also let us know the reason of your child’s absence.  If your child is away due to illness, please also let us know your child’s symptoms; particularly in the case of communicable diseases such as respiratory infections, strep throat, chickenpox, stomach flu, etc…

Our school and classrooms are cleaned daily.  However, we do realize that children like to “share” with others, even germs.  As such, we monitor attendance closely.  When we know that students have come down with chickenpox, the flu, etc… . (or when we notice a spike in student absences due to illness), this is reported to our custodial department and additional cleaning sanitizing procedures are followed.   We really appreciate your assistance with this by reporting your child’s symptoms when they are away due to illness.

We are getting ready for Kindergarten registration at our school.  Our Kindergarten registration day is Wednesday, February 19th from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  For more information, please call Mrs. Verma at the school office.

February’s Focus

This month, we are focusing on the importance  of respectful greetings.  At Devon Gardens, we do this by looking at each other, smiling and exchanging greetings such “hello”, “bonjour”, “goodbye”, etc…

Dragon Tickets

One of the ways we encourage and recognize positive student behaviour is through Dragon Tickets.  Staff have been giving students they  catch doing kind and nice things a Dragon Ticket.  On Fridays, we randomly draw 10 tickets to recognize and thank our students for being great role models.

Battery Recycling – until the end of February

The ECO Team at Devon Gardens is collecting single use batteries to recycle.  If you have single use batteries to recycle, please bring them into your child’s class or to the office.  Our ECO Team teacher leaders this year are Mme Santos, M Lawler, and Ms. Chan.  Thank you for their leadership and time in helping us reduce waste at our landfills.

School Twitter Page

Did you know that our school has a twitter page?  On it we share information and pictures (of students who have photo consent) as well as some of the events happening at our school.   Check it out!  It is another way that we connect and share with our parent community.

“Devon Gardens Green” – the results are in!

Thank you to all our students for voting for the Devon Gardens Green!  The results are in!  Our official school colour is Irish Green (choice #2).

Food Left on our Pathways

We shared with you in the Fall that we sometimes find food mysteriously left on our school grounds (usually on the path near the back of the school).  We are still finding food, like the picture here, left on our school grounds. The piles of food don’t appear to have come from a garbage can or green bin.  It’s more like “leftovers” (eg. large quantities of rice, beans, noodles, a loaf of bread, etc…).    Please help us spread the word to others to NOT leave food on our pathways.  Food left out attract rodents and other animals to our school grounds.

Talent Showcase

DG’s got talent!  As such, we are pleased to be having a talent show for our grades 4-7 students to audition and share their talent with the school.  Please stay tuned for more information … coming soon!

Sungod Skating Club Under the Sea Ice Show

A number of our students are participating in the Sungod Skating Club’s “Under the Sea” Ice Show on March 7th, at 1pm and 6pm, at Sungod Arena.  The cost of the tickets are $5 for children/students/senior and $10 for adults.  We have been given 4 free tickets for this event which we will give away through a random draw.  If you are able to attend the show on March 7th and would like to go, please fill in the form by Friday, February 21st.  The winner will be announced by the end of February.
