Week at a Glance Sept 27 – Oct 1

Dear DG Families,

Terry Fox Run

Devon Gardens will be participating in the annual Terry Fox Run again this year! Instead of running as a whole school students will be running in smaller groups of approximately 4 classes at a time in order to allow for more space outside. Our run date is Tuesday September 28th! Please have your child wear running shoes and clothes that allow for easy movement on this day. We also encourage students who want to, to bring in a “Toonie for Terry” which will go toward cancer research. Thank you for your support!

Wednesday, September 29th the Delta School District will be observing Orange Shirt Day.  Staff and students are encouraged to wear orange in remembrance and respect to the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada

Between the 1860s and the 1990s, approximately 150,000 Métis, Inuit and First Nations children were sent to  church-run schools residential schools.  Residential schools harmed Indigenous children by removing them from their families, forcing them to speak English or French instead of their ancestral languages, disconnecting them from their culture and traditions and forcing them to adopt Christianity in order to assimilate into Canadian society.  Learn more about the origins of Orange Shirt Day:

As you know, Thursday, September 30 is the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and schools will be closed.  This is a day for all of us to take some time to reflect on the truth of Canada’s past and the harmful legacy of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools and ways we can move towards reconciliation.  If you are looking for support and resources to help deepen your own understanding, start by reading the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action

Masks

A reminder that grades 4 – 7 students should be coming to school with a mask daily.

The B.C. government is requiring students in Grades 4 to 12 to wear a non medical mask indoors, at school.

All K-to-12 staff and visitors also need to wear masks indoors, and kids in kindergarten to Grade 3 are strongly encouraged to wear masks.

Please ensure your grade 4 – 7 child comes to schools with clean masks for the day.  While we do have masks for children who forget theirs, we don’t have enough to be regularly supplying masks to students on a daily basis.

Student Crossing Guards Grades 4 – 7

Our school liaison officer will be coming to Devon Gardens in the near future to train any grades 4 – 7 students who would like to volunteer as student crossing guards. If your child is interested in being a crossing guard, he/she will be taking home a permission slip form for you to sign. We will also upload the permission form to our notices page on the website.

Parent Connect

Please take the time to log in to Parent Connect and to update your forms. It is important that the information that we have for you is up to date.  As well, parent connect is the portal that you will need to use when booking parent teacher interviews.  Please see the link for details.

On Thursday, we will be sending home with your child a printed copy of the contact information that we currently have on file. Please take a moment to let us know if any of the information needs to be updated.
