Week at a Glance Oct 11 – 15

Dear DG Families,

Wishing all our families a very happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Reporting Absences

We are finding that sometimes absence information gets missed when parents just let the teacher know their child will be away.   For this reason, please also call the school office, at 604-581-6185, to report all absences (same day and upcoming) for your child.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent teacher conferences are happening this Wednesday (October 13th) and Thursday (October 14th).  Parent Teacher Conferences are an important opportunity for parents/guardians to have a one to one conversation with the teacher about their child’s progress and we encourage all parents to book an appointment.

The on-line booking through parent connect has now closed, so if you are still needing to book an appointment please email your child’s teacher directly.

This set of parent teacher conferences will take place via MS Teams. If you are not able to access Teams, please let your child’s teacher know and a phone appointment can be arranged.

Below is a link for a helpful guide for parents when using MS Teams.  We suggest that you read through this prior to conferences, and keep it handy for easy reference for your scheduled appointment.

P_T TEAMS conference guide for parents

To accommodate parent teacher conferences, students will be dismissed 1 hour earlier on both Wednesday, October 13th (dismissal at noon) and Thursday, October 14th (dismissal at 2:00 p.m.).

Please make a note of this in your calendars and advise daycare providers or other family members who pick up your child from school.

Scholastic Book Fair

From Mrs. Goldman, our librarian

I’m so excited our Scholastic Book fair is almost here. Due to Covid, our book fair will look a little different this year. As parent access to the school building is limited, parents will have the opportunity to shop online with the virtual book fair extension.  https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5147942

The site will be available for online purchases From October 11 to October 18. Students will have the opportunity to shop in person during their weekly library lesson. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Goldman at jgoldman@deltaschools.ca

Student Crossing Guard Schedule

Thank you to all of our Intermediate students who have shown an interest in being a crossing guard.  Student Crossing Guards are an important part of the Traffic Safety program at our school and they receive training from the Delta Police.

Most of the Crossing Guards who have handed in their permission forms have now been scheduled (please see the schedule link below).  If your child is unable to cover his/her shift we are asking them to find a replacement.

If your child has handed in their permission form and has not yet been scheduled, it could be because the partner listed has not handed their form in. Please be patient with all of us while we update the schedule as we get permission forms in to the office.

Crossing Guard Schedule

If your child would like to be a Crossing Guard, it’s not too late!   They can see Ms. Tee for more information and submit a permission form (see link below).

Cops for Cancer – Guessing Jar Challengeguess sweets in the jar - Clip Art Library

At the end of last week, we kicked off our first Cops for Cancer fundraiser – “The Guessing Jar Challenge”.   We have prepared a variety of jars containing different amounts of fun stuff (individually wrapped candies, toys, etc….).  Students can view these in the display case in the downstairs hallway.  For only $2 a guess, students may buy a ticket to guess how many objects they think are in a “jar” for a chance to win!   Students may enter as many times as they wish.  The closest guess for each jar, wins!     This is a great way for students to practice their estimation skills and help the Cops for Cancer Team raise funds for pediatric cancer research, all at the same time!    Guessing Tickets are available from classroom teachers and from the office.

There are currently 585 935 participants in BC registered for “The Great ShakeOut”, taking place October 21st, and our school is among them!    “The Great ShakeOut” is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer in case of an earthquake (“Drop, Cover and Hold On”), although we don’t just do this once a year.   We practice this emergency procedure, along with others such as fire drills and shelter in place procedures, several times throughout the school year.     In addition to participating in the Great ShakeOut, every fall we also review our school’s emergency plan and supplies.   Families are asked for a small annual donation to help us keep our emergency bin (the big metal bin by the gravel field) well stocked.   An letter with more information will be sent home on Thursday.

This is also a great time to review your own family’s Emergency Preparedness plan. Part of that plan should include who (an adult) would be able to pick up your children from school  in the event that an emergency situation (eg. earthquake) prevented you from getting to the school. On parent connect, this person is your designated “emergency release” (you can have more than one) and is the only person(s), other than a parent or guardian, to whom we can legally release a child in the event of an emergency closure.    A reminder that your “Emergency Release” is not necessarily the same person as your “Emergency Contact”, although it could be (ideally, your “Emergency Release” should be within walking distance of the school).   To review, again, the difference between Emergency Release and Emergency Contact, and to add/update an “Emergency Release” contact, please refer to this page on our website.   The  “Emergency Release” information is one of the few sections on Parent Connect that parents can update themselves.

Thinking about Emergency Preparedness can be overwhelming.   The “Get Prepared” website has some great information and a step-by-step guide for putting together your family’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, in about 20 minutes.    The “Great ShakeOut” website also has some great information you might want to review, such as what to do if an earthquake hits while you are driving, or in a store.
